Saving money as a teacher in the classroom

In the district that I work, I receive $200 per year to help outfit my classroom. Most of the time I try to use this money for extra curriculum or consumables. Last year I bought art supplies and a map for the wall. This year I plan to use my classroom money on buying more consumables like Kleenex and things the students use on a everyday basis. Time will tell what I will need this year for my students, since every year is a little different on needs.

Every year I state when the school year begins, this is the year that I am not going to spend a lot of money. I am getting better at looking for bargains (Goodwill, Value Village and garage sales) do help stretch the dollar. Also Target and Fred Meyer along with coupons. I also download FREE items from Currclick and Homeschoolshare. Pinterest is another site I will be checking out for great ideas.

So I am going to say it again this year - this is the year that I will not over spend money for my classroom and maybe you can follow along and see how I do.

So far this year I have bought a peel and stick white board (I'll let you know how this works once I get to school), 5 coloring art books (Value Village - $4.00), 1 box of Kleenex (Target - $.75), cement form to create plant holders (Home Depot - $7.54) and a few other odds and ends.

In the past I have used my own money on buying intriguing lapbooks and handwriting skill workbooks that I thought would have high interest and students would be able to take ownership in their learning.

What do you do about spending money for your classroom?

** UPDATE: Another site I think is worth mentioning is Homeschool Freebie of the Day  - this site has a variety of materials to download FREE. Whether its in MP3 format or storybooks, science material or social studies. It has a little of everything.

Single Serving Overnight Oatmeal

School starts for me next week and I am thinking of ways to be more efficient regarding breakfast and lunches. I am normally running out of the house and forgetting about breakfast until lunch time and by then I'm starving. I tried the recipe last year and I loved it - it was quick and I would fix it at night and forget about it until the morning. I would take it with me and when my students were eating their breakfast (they eat in the classroom) I would bring out my overnight oatmeal. Breakfast in a jar and all healthy. You should give it a try.

Single serving overnight oatmeal

Did you know that 1/2 cup of oatmeal provides 3 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber (Source:www.livingstrong.com)

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup yogurt (your choice - I use coconut milk)
2/3 cup milk (your choice- I use coconut milk - I was out the day I took this picture)
1 tsp honey
1/4 tsp cinnamon (health properties)
Handful of craisins (dried fruit of your choice)
Optional: chopped nuts

Put all in a wide mouth pint size jar and stir. Place in the refrigerator overnight.

Eat the next day. I find that I like it cold. Even on a cold day.

Homeschoolshare - this is the place for FREE lapbooks

As an educator in an alternative program for students who have learning deficits, I am always on the lookout for educational learning tools. A couple of years ago I came across some homeschooling sites that helped me create a hands-on learning approach for my students. Many of students thrive at this educational tool.  One of the sites that offer free lapbook (a creative way to learn material through a file folder and graphic organizers) is www.homeschoolshare.com.  I have found many unique topics here. The age range is from toddlers to upper elementary (I use a variety of these for high school students also, since quite a few have the learning ability of a 4th or 5th grader). Also if you join their site they will send periodic emails to you with great free lapbooks.

Recently, I received a write on to create my own templates. This e-book will save me time. Normally I type a heading, print it off, glue it on the template and make photo copies of it. This new e-book is great, all I do is find the template I need and type on it.

If you are an educator in a school or you are teaching your children at home, I would suggest you look over this site and see what you think.

Reward store in classroom

When I started teaching in a special education classroom, my fellow teachers all mentioned that I would need to have a reward store in my classroom. This system went against all that I believed in. I believed that students should do well in class and not be rewarded for good behavior or doing well on an assignment. Of course I listened to them and had a store which included items that I thought students would like to have.  I have changed the items over the years depending on my students wants and needs (I now ask them what they would like to see in store).

So this brings up this article, since school items are now popping up all over the place with sale prices and coupons. I like to buy store items at the lowest price since these products come out of my pocket.  Fred Meyer this week has Betty Crocker Fruit by the Foot, Gushers, Fruit Roll-ups for $2.50 each and then if you add the Fred Meyer digital coupon onto your card you will have $6/4 deducted off your price (expires 08/24/14). Also this digital coupon can be used 5 times within a single transaction. What this means is you could buy 20 Betty Crocker fruit snacks and receive $30 off. At that rate it would be great for lunches or after school snacks if you have young ones at home or even a pick me up for yourself (watch the sugar level - it's easy to get carried away). I love all of these products.

This would be a stock up price for me since each box would be $1.00.
Also each box should have a Box Tops for Education label and you can cut this out and give it to your PTA or fundraiser committee to collect - you will receive $.10 for each label (awesome fundraiser).
You might think how will just a couple of labels help my school - well if each teacher and student brought in 10 a month ($1.00) that could add up over time.

Target deal on Up and Up tissues

In my classroom, I always buy Kleenex for my students and myself. The stuff the district calls tissue and gives out to classrooms is so rough that over time it increases the soreness around the nose area during cold season and is unacceptable.

Target has a deal on facial tissues:

Up & Up facial tissues (160 ct) for $1.25
Use $.75/1 Target beauty coupon
Also Use 5% off Cartwheel (limit 4)
Total $.48 - stock up price

Thanks, momsbyheart

Currclick - Homeschool site with great deals

Whether you homeschool or an educator or a parent looking for fresh ideas - Currclick! is the place to go. This site has a wide variety of e-books, free e-books, free clubs, live clubs, lapbooks, unit studies.
CurrClick.com - Curriculum in a click! Homeschooling resources, lapbooks, and afffordable curriculum

A couple of years ago, I stumbled upon Currclick while looking for something different to teach my students. Lapbooks were an intriguing supplement that I grasped and jumped in with both feet. I am still using lapbooks in my alternative classroom to help students learn through a hands-on approach to all subjects.

I know you are asking what is a lapbook? It's a variety of mini-graphic organizers placed within a file folder after they have been filled in with the correct corresponding information.

Currently my middle school students are learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. I bought the butterfly lapbook from Currclick.

Butterflies Lapbook

I supplement it with other mini-graphic organizers from Homeschoolshare.

One thing I like about Currclick, is that they keep track of what you have bought. So over time, if something looks good and you click on it, you can see if you have bought it or not. Sometimes I forget if I have the ebook or not - then I can download it again if needed.

I highly recommend this site to anyone - take a look and see for yourself and tell me in the comments what you think of the site.

What I bought at Target

I went to Target specifically for the pet food deal going on this week at Target. Of course everyone else was scooping up the Target kitty food and the shelf was empty. I will need to go again this week and retrieve the kitty food and the cat litter and will need to revise what I buy since both items are on sale. I might need to buy another cat litter for me to reach the $40.

Instead of the pet food I was going to buy - I decided to check out the other deals in the store and match them with the coupons I had brought. This is what I got:

1 - 24 pack of watercolor $4.00
2 - Oil Pastels $1.41 each = $2.82 (minus 50% off original price of $1.41 = $.71)
1 - 24 erasable colored pencils $4.49
3 - 10 thin colored markers $1.29 each = $3.87
Used $2 off $10 of crayola products
Total was $12.28
1 post it notes $1.02
 Used $1.00 off Post-it's
Total was $.02
1 Scotch tape $1.00
Used $1.00 off Scotch tape
Total was FREE

1 Juicy Fruit Gum Chews $2.99
Used $.75 coupon for the gum
Used 50% cartwheel coupon for the gum
Total for the gum was $.75
2 Coffee-Mate Creamer @ $1.50 each
Used 2 - $1.00 coupons for the Coffee-Mate
Total for the creamer was $.50 each
 1 Nail polish remover $2.59
1 soccer ball $4.99
the last 2 items my daughter decided to throw in - the soccer ball was important because the last one got kicked under the deck at my parents house

Total spent at Target after all the coupons and then using my Target Red Card  (5% deducted) was $23.43 and I saved $11.13.
